Hartwell of Peterborough Court in the City of London, William Michael Berry, Baron

Hartwell of Peterborough Court in the City of London, William Michael Berry, Baron
▪ 2002

British newspaper magnate (b. May 18, 1911, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales—d. April 2, 2001, London, Eng.), was chairman and editor in chief of the Daily Telegraph for more than 30 years, from when he inherited the newspaper from his father, Viscount Camrose, in 1954 until his retirement in 1987. He built the Daily Telegraph into one of Britain's most admired quality newspapers and launched the equally successful Sunday Telegraph in 1960. Lord Hartwell was slow to modernize, however, and lost financial control to Canadian entrepreneur Conrad Black in 1985. He was granted a life peerage in 1968 and inherited the viscountcy, which he disclaimed for life, on the death of his older brother in 1995.
