      Australian-born television executive (b. July 8, 1929, Melbourne, Australia—d. Sept. 7, 2000, London, Eng.), had a 50-year career that took him from being the first face seen on Australian TV to being managing director of three British ITV franchises, one of which—the breakfast channel TV-am—he turned from impending bankruptcy in 1984 into one of the world's most profitable.
