      Canadian journalist (b. May 17, 1935, St. John's, Nfd.—d. May 26, 2000, Toronto, Ont.), passionately championed her native province of Newfoundland in writings for Saturday Night magazine that heralded the work of its sons and daughters; Gwyn also gained critical acclaim as a social historian with two insightful books: The Private Capital: Ambition and Love in the Age of Macdonald and Laurier (1984), for which she won the 1984 Governor General's Award for nonfiction, and Tapestry of War: A Private View of Canadians in the Great War (1992). On her last birthday, Gwyn was presented with the Order of Canada.
