Gotti, John Joseph

Gotti, John Joseph
▪ 2003

American organized crime leader (b. Oct. 27, 1940, South Bronx, N.Y.—d. June 10, 2002, Springfield, Mo.), arranged the murder of the head of the Gambino crime family in 1985 and took power, becoming famous both for his ability to escape successful prosecution, which earned him the nickname “the Teflon Don,” and for his flamboyant attire and expensive lifestyle, for which he became known as “the Dapper Don.” In 1992 he finally was convicted on racketeering and murder charges—including the murder that brought him to power—and he spent the rest of his life in prison.
