▪ 2007

Swedish kayaker (b. Nov. 21, 1919, Nyköping, Swed.—d. July 5, 2006, Nyköping), dominated the sport of kayak racing between 1948 and 1960, winning eight Olympic medals (including six gold) in four Games, as well as seven gold, two silver, and two bronze medals at four kayak flatwater racing world championships. His kayaking career included 56 individual championships, 35 first-place finishes in relay events, and 3 firsts in pairs events, an exceptional record that marked him as one of the greatest kayak racers ever. Although he was eligible to compete at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, Fredriksson instead coached the Swedish men's kayaking team.
