▪ 2006American illustrator (b. Aug. 27, 1922, Hornell, N.Y.—d. Jan. 2, 2005, Los Angeles, Calif.), earned the designation of “the most popular illustrator in the history of science fiction” with his stylized depictions of fantastic landscapes, alien women, and painstakingly detailed robots. While his work in that genre earned him 11 Hugo Awards, Freas was best remembered as the cover artist of Mad magazine (1958–62) and as the spiritual father of Mad's gap-toothed mascot, Alfred E. Neuman.
