Evans, Gwynfor

      Welsh politician (b. Sept. 1, 1912, Barry, Glamorgan, Wales—d. April 21, 2005, Pencarreg, Carmarthenshire, Wales), devoted his life to the peaceful cause of Welsh nationalism as vice president (1943–45), president (1945–81), and honorary president (from 1982) of Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist political party. A lawyer by training, Evans was educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and St. John's College, Oxford. He represented Plaid Cymru in the British Parliament (1966–70 and 1974–79) and gained national attention for himself and his cause in 1980 when his threat of a hunger strike forced Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's government to follow through on a promise to establish a television station for Wales.
