Dudley, Jane

      American dancer, choreographer, and teacher (b. April 3, 1912, New York, N.Y.—d. Sept. 19, 2001, London, Eng.), was influential in the development of modern dance in three countries. In the U.S. she danced with Martha Graham's company from 1937 to 1944 and frequently thereafter as a guest artist, as well as teaching for Graham and at colleges and universities and dancing with and choreographing for the New Dance Group and the Dudley-Maslow-Bales Trio. In 1968 she went to Tel Aviv, Israel, as artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company, and in 1970 she moved to England to join the staff of the London Contemporary Dance School. Dudley left the post of director of contemporary dance studies in 1990 but remained affiliated with the school until 1998.
