Darman, Richard Gordon
▪ 2009

      American government official

born May 10, 1943, Charlotte, N.C.

died Jan. 25, 2008, Washington, D.C.
served in the cabinets of four U.S. presidents (Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush), but he was best remembered as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under Bush. Darman advised the president to reverse a key 1988 campaign pledge, and the decision by President Bush in 1990 to renege on his promise “Read my lips, no new taxes” undermined voters' trust and was considered to have cost him reelection in 1992. Darman graduated from Harvard University (B.A., 1964) and from Harvard Business School (M.B.A., 1967).
