      American impresario (b. July 12, 1926, New York, N.Y.—d. Dec. 15, 2002, Rancho Mirage, Calif.), was the founder, in 1957, of the Santa Fe (N.M.) Opera and served as its general director until he stepped down in 2000. The company gained international renown after Igor Stravinsky participated in the 1957–63 seasons. Crosby was also known for introducing new and little-performed works and for occasionally taking up the baton himself.
