Carter, Janette
▪ 2007

American musician (b. July 2, 1923, Maces Spring, Va.—d. Jan. 22, 2006, Kingsport, Tenn.), the last second-generation member of the Carter Family—known as the “first family” of country music—was instrumental in preserving Appalachian musical traditions. Carter's first public appearance with the Carter Family was in Del Rio, Texas, for the radio station XERA in 1939. Honouring a promise she had made to her father, A.P. Carter, shortly before his death, Janette Carter in 1974 converted the family grocery store in Hiltons, Va., into an auditorium in which she and other musicians regularly performed traditional country music. In 1979 she enlarged it to create the Carter Family Fold as both a musical venue and a cultural centre for the preservation of country music traditions. In 2005 Carter was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Bess Lomax Hawes Award for traditional arts.
