Carlos Moreira de Castro 
      Brazilian songwriter who helped make samba Brazil's most popular form of music, earning the title “King of Samba” for his numerous songs about life in the Brazilian favelas, or shantytowns; in 1928 he helped found the influential Mangueira Samba School and Recreational Society, which sponsored a troupe that performed annually during Rio's Carnival celebrations (b. Aug. 2, 1902, Rio de Janeiro, Braz.—d. Aug. 16, 1999, Rio de Janeiro).
