New Zealand-born British scholar and lexicographer (b. Jan. 27, 1923, Wanganui, N.Z.—d. July 5, 2004, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, Eng.), ushered into print the four-volume Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary (1972–86); he was personally responsible for adding words and phrases of non-British origin as well as controversial vulgarisms to the OED. Burchfield moved to England in 1949 as a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford and held several teaching posts there. He was named editor of the Supplement in 1957 and was chief editor of Oxford English Dictionaries from 1971 to 1984. A noted workaholic, he also wrote and edited a number of books on language, including The New Fowler's Modern English Usage, 3rd ed. (1996). Burchfield was made CBE in 1975.
