Matilda Genevieve Scaduto
American songwriter (b. Aug. 7, 1925, Milwaukee, Wis.—d. April 22, 2003, Gatlinburg, Tenn.), with her husband, Boudleaux Bryant, formed one of the most successful and prolific songwriting teams in history. The pair met and married in 1945, and soon he began setting her poems to music. In 1950 they were persuaded to relocate to Nashville, Tenn.; they were probably the first to move there in order to make a living as songwriters. Their more than 800 songs included most of the hits of the Everly Brothers, among them “Bye Bye Love” and “Wake Up, Little Susie,” as well as the bluegrass standard “Rocky Top.” The Bryants were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1986 and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1991.
