      British violinist and conductor (b. Jan. 7, 1941, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng.—d. June 5, 2004, Salisbury), directed (1974–80) London's Academy of St. Martin in the Fields chamber orchestra during the time that it became one of the most recorded in the world. Born into a family of musicians (her three siblings all performed professionally), she established herself as a soloist and conductor before assuming directing roles at St. Martin and later in Oslo, Los Angeles, and Birmingham, Eng. She was appointed OBE in 1986.
