      American actor (b. Oct. 18, 1935, Norristown, Pa.—d. Dec. 12, 2006, New York, N.Y.), showcased his comedic talents in a series of films, notably as the creature in Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein (1974) and as the curmudgeonly Frank Barone (1996–2005) in the television sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. He also was known for serious roles, and it was his portrayal of the bigoted blue-collar title character in Joe (1970) that launched his career. Other dramatic film roles followed; he was a savvy campaign manager in The Candidate (1972), a corrupt union leader in F.I.S.T (1978), and a cool private eye in Hammett (1982). Though he was nominated for Emmy Awards seven times for his work on Raymond, the one Emmy he won was for a dramatic role—his 1995 guest appearance on The X-Files.
