▪ 2005
Bernhard Leopold Frederik Everhard Julius Coert Karel Godfried Pieter, prince of The Netherlands, prince of Lippe-Biesterfeld
German-born Dutch royal (b. June 29, 1911, Jena, Ger.—d. Dec. 1, 2004, Utrecht, Neth.), was the husband of one Dutch queen, Juliana (q.v. (Juliana, Princess )), and the father of another, Beatrix. Bernhard gained international respect as a Dutch patriot (especially during World War II) and as the founding president (1961–77) of the World Wildlife Fund, despite initial Dutch reservations regarding his German heritage, a youthful reputation for fast cars and reckless habits, and accusations in 1976 that he had accepted bribes from American aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Corp. Bernhard was born into a German royal family and was educated in Germany and Switzerland. In 1936, while working for a German chemical company in Paris, he met then Princess Juliana; they were married on Jan. 7, 1937.
