▪ 2006

Russian-born Italian concert pianist (b. Feb. 26, 1930, Leningrad, U.S.S.R. [now St. Petersburg, Russia]—d. Feb. 6, 2005, Florence, Italy), was a child prodigy who enjoyed an illustrious reputation in the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe for his great technical mastery. Between the late 1950s and the mid-1970s, he was not allowed to travel abroad. Berman made his American debut in 1976 and showcased not only his technical mastery but also his splendid romantic style and flair for musical interpretation. He made numerous recordings with conductor Herbert von Karajan. In 1990 Berman moved to Italy and joined the Music Conservatory in Imola as a teacher. He took Italian citizenship in 1994.
