      Indian poet and lyricist (b. about 1920, Mijwan, United Provinces [now Uttar Pradesh], India—d. May 10, 2002, Mumbai [Bombay], India), sought to inspire social change through his passionate Urdu-language verse, as well as through the lyrics (and occasional dialogue) he wrote for numerous popular Bollywood motion pictures. A committed member of the Communist Party from a young age, Azmi worked as a trade unionist and wrote for the Party newspaper Quami Jung. Financial need induced him to try writing lyrics for Bollywood in 1948. He was only the second Urdu poet chosen to be a fellow of the Sahitya Academy.
