Any of a class of equations that relate the pressure P, volume V, and temperature T of a given substance in thermodynamic equilibrium.

For example, the equation PV = nRT, where n is the number of moles of gas and R is the universal gas constant, relates the pressure, volume, and temperature of a perfect gas. Real gases, solids, and liquids have more complicated equations of state. See also thermodynamics.

      The simplest known example of an equation of state is the one relating the pressure P, the volume V, and the absolute temperature T of one mole of a perfect gas; that is, PV = RT, in which R is the universal gas constant.
