Private university in Providence, Rhode Island, U.S., a traditional member of the Ivy League.It was founded in 1764 as Rhode Island College and renamed in 1804 for a benefactor, Nicholas Brown. It became coeducational in 1971 when it merged with Pembroke, a women's college founded in 1891. Today it offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in all major academic fields; its school of medicine awards the M.D. Research facilities include centres for geological, astronomical, and educational research.

It was first chartered in Warren, R.I., in 1764 as Rhode Island College, a Baptist institution for men. The school moved to Providence in 1770 and adopted its present name in 1804 in honour of benefactor Nicholas Brown. Francis Wayland, president of Brown from 1827 to 1855, broadened the curriculum by expanding electives, adding modern languages, and improving laboratory equipment.In 1971 the university became coeducational by merging with the affiliated Pembroke College. It consists of an undergraduate college and graduate and medical schools. Undergraduate students are expected to design their own multidisciplinary program of study rather than follow the more conventional approach of choosing from established major and minor course programs. Total enrollment is approximately 7,600.
