American Protective Association (APA)

American Protective Association (APA)
Secret anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant society formed in Iowa in 1887.

Its membership, consisting mainly of farmers who feared the growth and political power of immigrant-populated cities, rose to more than two million in the 1890s. Membership dwindled after the election of 1896 and the return of agricultural prosperity in the Midwest. By 1911 the society had disappeared.
