In Hinduism, a representation of the female sexual organ and feminine generative power, the symbol of the goddess Shakti (see shakti).

The yoni is often associated with the phallic linga, the symbol of the god Shiva. The linga is depicted in art as resting in the yoni, their union representing the eternal process of creation and regeneration.

Sanskrit“abode,” “source,” “womb,” or “vagina”

in Hinduism, aniconic representation of the female sexual organ and the symbol of the goddess Shakti, the feminine generative power and, as a goddess, the consort of Shiva. The yoni is often associated in the iconography of Shaivism with the phallic linga, Shiva's symbol. The linga is depicted in sculpture and paintings as resting in the yoni as a cylinder in a spouted dish. The two symbols together represent the eternal process of creation and regeneration.
