Any of the prehistoric cultures of eastern North America dating from the 1st millennium BC.

The category includes cultures such as the Adena and Hopewell. Woodland cultures were characterized by the raising of corn, beans, and squash, the fashioning of distinctive pottery, the use of the bow and arrow, and the building of burial mounds. Most of these cultures were replaced by the Mississippian culture in the 1st millennium AD.
