a former borough, now part of Merton, in SE England, near London: international tennis tournaments.

Municipal center in the Greater London borough of Merton, known as the site of the annual lawn-tennis All-England Championships.

Held in late June and early July, the tournament is the oldest (founded 1877) and most prestigious in the world. It is one of four tournaments that make up the Grand Slam of tennis, and the only one still played on natural grass. Competition was opened to professionals in 1968.

Located about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of the City of London (London, City of), it is the site of the annual All-England Championships, better known as the Wimbledon Championships, in lawn tennis. The district also includes Wimbledon Stadium, which is a venue for racing events; Wimbledon Theatre (1910); and Wimbledon Common, an open parkland.
