city, district, and port, north-central North Island, New Zealand. It is situated on a 2-mile (3-kilometre) neck projecting from the southeastern shore of Tauranga Harbour, a crescent-shaped inlet opening onto the Bay of Plenty. An Anglican mission was established there in 1834, and its Elms Mission House (1838–47) still stands. The Monmouth Redoubt, built as defense against the Maoris during the wars of the 1860s, also remains. The city's name is a Maori word meaning “resting place,” or “safe anchorage.” Tauranga was incorporated as a borough in 1882 and became a city in the early 1960s. Located along the East Coast Main Trunk Railway to Auckland (179 miles [288 km] northwest), it serves an agricultural district (livestock, fruit, and vegetables). It contains oil installations, flour and cement mills, printing houses, boatyards, and factories that produce clothing and prefabricated materials for houses. The city uses the deepwater port at Maunganui (5 miles [8 km] northeast) for exporting wool, meat, dairy products, pulp, paper, and timber. Pop. (2001) 95,694.
