Makoto Iwamatsu 
      Japanese-born American actor (b. Dec. 10, 1933, Kobe, Japan—d. July 21, 2006, Somis, Calif.), became an accomplished performer in Hollywood and on Broadway and was widely credited with helping Asian Americans secure better roles. After playing bit parts on such television shows as McHale's Navy and I Spy, Mako earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his role in the motion picture The Sand Pebbles (1966) as well as a Tony Award nomination for best actor in a musical for his work onstage in Pacific Overtures (1976). He cofounded (1965) the East West Players, the first Asian American theatre company in the U.S., and served as the company's artistic director until 1989.
