Species (Elops saurus, family Elopidae) of primarily tropical coastal marine fish.

The ladyfish is slender and covered with fine silver scales; the dorsal and anal fins can be depressed into grooves. A predatory fish, it has small, sharp teeth and a bony throat plate between its mandibles. It is up to 35 in. (90 cm) long and weighs up to 30 lbs (14 kg). The young are transparent and eel-like.

      (Elops saurus), primarily tropical coastal marine fish of the family Elopidae (order Elopiformes), related to the tarpon and bonefish. The ladyfish is slender and pikelike in form and covered with fine silver scales; there are grooves into which the dorsal and anal fins can be depressed. A predatory fish, the ladyfish has small, sharp teeth and a bony throat plate between its mandibles. It ranges in length up to 90 cm (35 inches) and may weigh up to 13.6 kg (30 pounds). The young are transparent and eellike.

      The name ladyfish is also sometimes applied to other marine fishes, including the bonefish (q.v.). The Spanish ladyfish, or pudiano (Bodianus rufus), is a red and gold wrasse of the family Labridae.
