City (pop., 2000 prelim.: 1,249,851) and port, Honshu, Japan.

It lies on Tokyo Bay, between Tokyo and Yokohama. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, it has since been rebuilt. It is a major industrial centre for machinery and chemicals manufacturing and has large shipbuilding facilities. It is the site of a 12th-century Buddhist temple.

Almost completely destroyed in World War II, the city has since been rebuilt. There are three industrial sections—heavy industry along the reclaimed coast, the automobile, machine, and tool industries in the city centre, and light chemical industries in the northwest. After a 1976 fire in Kawasaki, the city was rebuilt using extensive fire-prevention techniques, including provision of fire breaks, parks, and roads. The city houses the Buddhist Heigen Temple. Pop. (2005) 1,327,011.
