a colorless crystalline compound, C2Cl6, with a camphorlike odor, soluble in alcohol and ether, insoluble in water: used in organic synthesis and pyrotechnics, as a retarding agent in fermentation, and as a solvent. Also called carbon hexachloride, perchloroethane.
