an acute febrile disease of humans and dogs, characterized by inflammation of the stomach and intestines and by jaundice: caused by a spirochete, Leptospira canicola. Cf. canine leptospirosis, leptospirosis.
[1940-45; < NL, after the specific epithet of the spirochete, lit., dwelling in dogs, equiv. to L cani(s) dog + -cola, fem. of -colus -COLOUS]
