the pipal, or sacred fig tree, Ficus religiosa, of India, under which the founder of Buddhism is reputed to have attained the Enlightenment that constituted him the Buddha. Also called bodhi tree.
[1860-65; partial trans. of Sinhalese bogaha, equiv. to bo ( < Pali bodhi < Skt; see BODHISATTVA) + gaha tree]

      according to Buddhist tradition, the pipal (Ficus religiosa) under which the Buddha sat when he attained Enlightenment (Bodhi) at Bodh Gaya (near Gaya, west-central Bihar state, India). A living pipal at Anuradhapura, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), is said to have grown from a cutting from the Bo tree sent to that city by King Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. See Ficus.
