Winfrey
(1954– )
a US entertainer who presents The Oprah Winfrey Show, the most popular US television chat show. She won the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1998, by which stage she had already won seven Emmy awards as ‘Outstanding Talk Show Host’. The show began in 1986 and includes ordinary people talking about their personal problems, often in a very emotional way. A part of the show from 1996 to 2002 was ‘Oprah’s Book Club’, in which she recommended and discussed books. Books chosen for the show became best-sellers. In 1996 Winfrey was paid more than any other US entertainer and in 1998 she was named one of the ‘100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century’ by Time magazine. Winfrey has her own magazine called ‘O’.
