loyal toast
n [usu sing]
(in Britain) a toast (= an act of raising one’s glass and drinking at the same time as other people) at a formal dinner, to show loyalty to the queen or king. People say ‘the Queen’ or ‘the King’ and then drink. People are traditionally not allowed to smoke until after the loyal toast.
