amateur dramatics

amateur dramatics
(also infml am-dram) n [U]
the activity of people who perform plays, etc. as a hobby and not for money. It is very popular in Britain, where there are many amateur dramatics clubs for people to join, even in small towns and villages, and most schools and universities have clubs. They perform plays for local people, charging them a small amount in order to pay for the costumes, hall, etc. People who do amateur dramatics are often very enthusiastic, but not always very good actors.
