syn·tro·phism (sĭn-trōʹfĭz'əm) also syn·tro·phy (sĭnʹtrə-fē) n.
A biological relationship in which microorganisms of two different species or strains are mutually dependent on one another for nutritional requirements.

      mutual dependence of different types of organisms for the satisfaction of their respective nutritional needs. The intermediate or end products of metabolism of one organism are essential materials for another. Syntrophism is exemplified in the mixed population of an ecosystem (q.v.).
