Pinck·ney (pĭngkʹnē), Charles Cotesworth. 1746-1825.
American diplomat. As a minister to France (1797) he refused to offer a bribe to French negotiators, causing the conflict known as the XYZ Affair. His cousin Charles Pinckney (1757-1824) made important contributions to the U.S. Constitution.
