1. Abbr. NB or N.B. A province of eastern Canada on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Part of French Acadia and then the province of Nova Scotia, it became a separate province in 1784 after an influx of Loyalists from the newly independent United States. New Brunswick joined Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario to form the confederated Dominion of Canada in 1867. Fredericton is the capital and St. John the largest city. Population: 696,405.
2. A city of central New Jersey on the Raritan River southwest of Newark. Settled in 1681, it served as headquarters for both the British and Continental armies during the American Revolution. Population: 41,711.
