Olivet College

Olivet College

private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Olivet, Mich., U.S., located about 30 miles (50 km) southwest of Lansing. A liberal arts college affiliated with the Congregational Christian Church and the United Church of Christ, it offers bachelor's degree programs in arts and sciences, business, communications, education, health and physical education, and music. The college's facilities include a music conservatory, an astronomical observatory, and the 60-acre (24-hectare) Kirkelldel Biological Preserve.

Olivet, established in 1844, was the second coeducational institution of higher learning in the United States. Soronian, the oldest collegiate sorority in the country, was founded there in 1847. In 1888 Olivet, along with three other colleges, formed the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest such association in the United States. Author Ford Madox Ford (Ford, Ford Madox) and historian Gottfried Mann were among its notable faculty members.
