Kyŏngsang-nam

Kyŏngsang-nam

 do (province), southeastern South Korea. It is bordered east by the Sea of Japan, south by the Korea Strait, west by Chŏlla-nam and Chŏlla-puk do, and north by Kyŏngsang-puk do. Pusan, capital of the province, was separated administratively in 1963, when it was elevated to the status of a special city. The Naktong River and its tributaries irrigate most of the province. The Kimhae delta plain, situated 9.5 miles (15 km) north to south and 4 miles (6.5 km) east to west, is one of the country's best granaries. In addition to rice, barley, beans, and potatoes, special agricultural products include cotton, flax, sesame, and fruits such as pears, oranges from the southern seaside, and sweet persimmons.

      The length of the irregular coastline, including more than 400 islands, is about 1,400 miles (2,250 km). The interaction of warm and cold currents produces abundant sea life, and more than 40 kinds of marine products are caught annually, making the province one of the country's leading fisheries. Various light industries are carried on in the cities of Chinju, Ch'ungmo, and Samch'ŏnp'o, and there are heavy industries and chemical production in the large port cities of Ulsan, Masan, and Chinhae. The mountain Chiri-san (6,283 feet [1,915 m]), on the boundary with Chŏlla-puk do, is the centre of a national park in which Haein Temple, constructed in 802, is located. Area 4,579 square miles (11,859 square km). Pop. (1990 prelim.) 3,680,000.
