mal·ic acid (mălʹĭk, māʹlĭk) n.
A colorless, crystalline compound, COOH·CH2·CHOH·COOH, that occurs naturally in a wide variety of unripe fruit, including apples, cherries, and tomatoes, and is used as a flavoring and in the aging of wine.
