      seventh Sikh (Sikhism) Guru, whose administration marked a period of decline in the fortunes of the Sikh community. Unlike his grandfather, the great military Guru Hargobind, Har Rai was a man of peace, ill-suited to resisting Mughal oppression.

      The contemplative Har Rai spent more time in spiritual exercises than in administrative or military duties, and he knew little about wielding political power. Sikh missionary activity declined, even though Har Rai traveled in the Malwa area, where he brought the local Brar tribes into the Sikh fold. The Malwa Sikhs were the first Sikhs to establish their political supremacy in the middle decades of the 18th century. Har Rai's prolonged exile from the mainstream of Sikh life weakened a people who took heart at the sight of their leader. Thus, serious internal opposition to him arose. His first political blunder was to help Dara Shikoh, brother of the reigning Mughal (Mughal Dynasty) emperor, Aurangzeb, foment rebellion. Har Rai maintained that as a true Sikh he had simply helped a man who needed help. When Aurangzeb summoned him to explain his extraordinary conduct, Har Rai sent his son Ram Rai (Rām Rāiyā) to represent him.

      Legend has it that Ram Rai worked many miracles at the court but finally had to win pardon for his father by altering a line of text in the Sikh scripture, the Adi Granth (Ādi Granth) (“First Volume”), to appease the emperor. Guru Har Rai never forgave his son for this blasphemy and shortly before his death passed over Ram Rai as his successor in favour of his five-year-old son, Hari Krishen.
