Gaprindashvili, Nona

▪ Soviet chess player
born March 5, 1941, Zugdidi, Georgia, U.S.S.R.

women's world chess champion from 1962 to 1978. A strong attacking player, Gaprindashvili won the title from Elizaveta Bykova of the Soviet Union in 1962 by a crushing score of 9–2. From the 1960s to the late 1970s, she was considered the strongest female chess player since Vera Menchik-Stevenson (Menchik-Stevenson, Vera Francevna) (1906–44). Gaprindashvili was a great hero in Soviet Georgia and an honorary member of the Congress of People's Deputies of the Soviet Union.

After successfully defending her title four times, Gaprindashvili lost it to fellow Georgian Maya Chiburdanidze (Chiburdanidze, Maya) in 1978. Gaprindashvili was awarded the international master title in 1962 and the international grandmaster title in 1980.
