Edenton

Edenton

town, seat of Chowan county, northeastern North Carolina, U.S., on Albemarle Sound. Settled about 1660, the first permanent settlement in colonial North Carolina, it went under several names before it was incorporated in 1722 and named for Charles Eden, the first royal governor. Edenton served as the unofficial capital of the colony until 1743, and its busy port exported plantation products, lumber, and fish. Joseph Hewes, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived there; his house and many other colonial structures have been preserved, including the Cupola (c. 1725) and Iredell (1800) houses, St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1736), and the Chowan County Court House (1767). A bronze teapot marker commemorates the anti-British Edenton Tea Party (October 25, 1774) staged by women of the town. The town's basic agricultural economy (peanuts [groundnuts] and cotton) is supplemented by light manufacturing, fishing, lumbering, and boating. Pop. (1990) 5,268; (2000) 5,394.
