It is situated in Inyo National Forest on the Middle Fork San Joaquin River,
about 12 miles (
20 km)
southeast of Yosemite National Park.
The monument,
which lies on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada,
was established in 1911;
it has an area of 1.
2 square miles (
3 square km).
The monument'
s most notable feature is the Devils Postpile formation,
consisting of a wall,
or cliff,
of polygonal basaltic (
basalt)
columns some 40 to 60 feet (
12 to 18 metres)
tall and 10 to 30 inches (
25 to 75 cm)
in diameter.
It was created within the last 100,
000 years by the cooling and cracking of hot lava.
Also in the monument is the 101-
foot- (
31-
metre-)
high Rainbow Falls (
accessible by hiking trail)
on the Middle Fork San Joaquin River.
The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail,
joined by the John Muir Trail,
traverses the northern half of the monument.
