Winning, Thomas Joseph Cardinal

Winning, Thomas Joseph Cardinal
▪ 2002

Scottish cleric (b. June 3, 1925, Wishaw, Scot.—d. June 17, 2001, Glasgow, Scot.), was the spiritual leader of Roman Catholics in Scotland; his service as archbishop of Glasgow from 1974 until his death—cardinal from 1994—was marked by his unflinching defense of Catholic views on abortion and homosexuality. He supported the Pro-Life Initiative, a program that gave money and other aid to women who agreed not to have abortions, and forcefully argued against equating homosexual relationships with traditional marriage. He was also a notable advocate of public efforts to combat poverty and homelessness. Winning studied at the Pontifical Scots College in Rome, was ordained in 1948, and became a bishop in 1971, three years before his elevation to archbishop.
