      Swedish opera singer (b. Dec. 30, 1943, Stockholm, Swed.—d. March 18, 2002, Vienna, Austria), abandoned a career in structural engineering for one in music and for almost 30 years was a leading tenor in most of the major opera houses across Europe and the U.S. Winbergh worked for his father's construction firm and sang part-time in a rock band before he entered the Stockholm Opera School at age 24. After making his professional debut in 1972, he was a principal tenor (1973–81) with the Royal Opera in Stockholm; he made his U.S. debut in 1974. As a young man, Winbergh specialized in lyrical roles, but he carefully nurtured his mature voice, and in the 1990s he excelled at powerful dramatic roles, including Wagner's Tristan and Parsifal.
