      American feminist and journalist (b. Dec. 14, 1941, New York, N.Y.—d. Nov. 9, 2006, Queens, N.Y.), agitated for women's rights, especially abortion rights, as the author of numerous articles; as a founder in 1969 of the influential Redstockings, a short-lived radical feminist consciousness-raising group; and as a founder of No More Nice Girls, a street-theatre group. Willis, whose writings often featured the three R's—radicalism, religion, and rock—was the first pop-music critic at The New Yorker magazine and a frequent contributor to the New York weekly the Village Voice. As a professor of journalism from 1990 at New York University, she founded (1995) the country's only cultural reporting and criticism program. Her essays, which focused on the relationship between feminism and American popular culture, were collected i Beginning to See the Light (1981), No More Nice Girls (1992), and Don't Think, Smile! Notes on a Decade of Denial (1999).
