      U.S. physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, which produced the atomic bomb, and later, in the 1950s, was part of a team that discovered the antiproton, using the bevatron particle accelerator at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif. Although his contribution was considered crucial, Wiegand was excluded when two other members of the research team (Owen Chamberlain and Emilio Segrè) were awarded the 1959 Nobel Prize for Physics for this work (b. May 23, 1915—d. July 5, 1996).
