Walker, Edwin Anderson

Walker, Edwin Anderson
▪ 1994

general (ret.), U.S. Army (b. Nov. 10, 1909, Center Point, Texas—d. Oct. 31, 1993, Dallas, Texas), valiantly served in World War II as the leader of the "Devil's Brigade" commandos, who fought at the Anzio beachhead in Italy and in the invasion of southern France, but he later resigned (1961) from the army with the rank of major general after receiving a public admonishment for circulating right-wing literature to his troops in Germany and publicly asserting that former U.S. president Harry Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, and former secretary of state Dean Acheson were all "definitely pink." Walker, a 1931 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., was decorated with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with cluster, and the Legion of Merit for his outstanding combat record. During the Korean War he commanded the 3rd Infantry Division's 7th Regiment and served as senior adviser to the 1st Korean Corps. He later was military adviser to Chiang Kai-shek, leader of China's Nationalist government. Walker commanded the federal troops that were ordered (1957) to Little Rock, Ark., to enforce school integration. A member of the right-wing John Birch Society, Walker then began an active role in efforts to resist the civil rights movement in the South. After federal marshals were ordered to the University of Mississippi to quell riots and secure the admission of black student James Meredith, Walker was arrested on a federal warrant charging him with insurrection and seditious conspiracy. The charges were later dropped. A few months later he was the target of an unknown assassin (later identified as Lee Harvey Oswald), who fired a bullet that narrowly missed Walker's head as he sat in his study. In 1982 the pension that Walker had forfeited because he resigned rather than retired from military service was quietly reinstated by the army.
